The Dark Kingdom was an evil organization led by the noncorporeal entity Queen Metalia and based at the North Pole, albeit deep under the Earth's surface. Its forces were commanded by Queen Beryl.

In the manga and Crystal, the Dark Kingdom's operations were widespread across the Northern Hemisphere, focused in four divisions: North America, Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East. These divisions were controlled by Nephrite, Zoisite, Kunzite, and Jadeite, respectively.

In the original anime, the Dark Kingdom appeared to be based within vast caverns with twisted and eerie features, like the large monstrous stone head on a pillar behind Beryl's throne. They also had secondary operating areas such as Nephrite's mansion in Tokyo, and seemed to be connected to the Star Light Tower used by Zoisite and Kunzite.

In the live-action series, the exact location of the Dark Kingdom was never fully explained, but it seemed to have its own extra-dimensional space. The scenery within the Dark Kingdom included underground caverns, ordinary-looking rooms, and a small forest.

A new and different Dark Kingdom was also created by Mio Kuroki in the Special Act of the live-action series. This Dark Kingdom was located in an abandoned amusement park and consisted of only Queen Mio, a stuffed dog toy which Mio magically mended, two Youma, and a multitude of Pierrot, four of which masqueraded as the Shitennou.
