In Act 36, Queen Beryl forced Nephrite to stab himself to prove to Mamoru that her power over the Shitennou was absolute. Though it appeared at the time that he had died, in Act 37 he re-appeared in Tokyo as a human. Becoming human made him only angrier than he had been before, and in one of his bouts of fury he encountered Motoki Furuhata.
Motoki felt sorry for the stranger and gave him a job at Karaoke Crown, despite the fact that his temper tantrums often caused more harm than good. Declaring that the man's name was too hard to pronounce, Motoki dubbed him "Nefukichi," a combination of "Nephrite" and "Kamekichi." Though "Nefukichi" was not fond of the name, the alternatives (such as "Nefurin") which Motoki suggested were only worse.
When he encountered Ami Mizuno in Tokyo, "Nefukichi" recognized her as the former Dark Mercury and seemed to have some sort of feelings for her. He worked to find a present to give her as repayment for the cloak she made him, and when she presented him with some burned homemade cookies, he devoured them even though they tasted bad.
