Tsutomu Asai was an anime-only character. He was an old friend of Minako's from before she visited England, but they lost contact after she came back, since she had quit volleyball in order to concentrate more on her career as a Sailor Senshi. Minako had a crush on him, but he only wanted to date a girl who played volleyball. This made Minako consider retiring as a Sailor Senshi until she found out that he already had a girlfriend, the girl who was the manager of the volleyball team.
He was attacked by a Daimon and his Pure Heart Crystal was removed, but he was still aware enough to notice Sailor Venus use Minako's famous Flying Somersault Reception move against the Daimon, which made him realize that Minako and Sailor Venus were the same person. After he got his Heart Crystal back he contacted Minako and asked her to thank Sailor Venus for him should she ever run into her. While Minako did not acknowledge this, it was implied that she understood from that statement that he knew her true identity.
