Ami Mizuno

Ami Mizuno is the present incarnation of Sailor Mercury, and appears in all versions of Sailor Moon.

In Act Zero of the live action series, she imagined herself as "Sailor A", wearing the same costume of Sailor V.

Personality

Ami is a shy girl who doesn't make friends easily, preferring to be alone with her books instead. She studies very hard and regularly finishes at the top of national exams, leading her classmates to speculate that she is superhuman and has an IQ of 300. Math and science are her favorite subjects, and she is aiming to become a doctor like her mother. Usually calm and level-headed, she is the voice of reason of the Senshi team. The others often rely on her plans and analyses, but they think she should "loosen up" more.

Ami is a kind and gentle person who dislikes quarrels and abhors harming innocent people. This trait has even been cited in the title of a Sailor Moon S episode, Believe in Love! Ami, a Kind Hearted Senshi, where she persuades Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune not to kill Hotaru. Like her comrades, her loyalty to Sailor Moon is unwavering, and she will sacrifice her life for her princess if necessary.

In Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, Ami is far less innocent and trusting, and is a deeper character. In this continuity, her desire to become a doctor is actually due to pressure by her mother.

Family

Ami lives with her mother in all the series' continuities, although she is often portrayed as not particularly close to her due to her mother's busy schedule as a doctor. Ami's father, a painter, is divorced from her mother. He sends Ami a birthday card every year, but she has not seen him for a long time.

In the story Parallel Sailor Moon, she is married to an unseen man, and has one child, also called Ami. Ami works as an underpaid doctor alongside her husband, and her daughter is also a Sailor Senshi.

Hobbies

Ami in PGSM

Ami spends most of her time studying and fighting as Sailor Mercury, leaving little for hobbies. However, she enjoys swimming and playing chess, both of which she excels at. She also likes listening to music.

In the anime, Ami also acquires other hobbies and talents, including songwriting and fixing cars.

Relationships

  • In the first season, Ami and Ryo Urawa develop feelings for each other, but Ami denies them at first, saying she has no time for a boyfriend. Eventually in another episode the two go out on a date, but Ryo leaves Tokyo soon after and finally appears in the penultimate episode of the first season where he appears as a non-speaking illusion, but he is not mentioned in the story again after this. Outside of canon, he returns in Sailor Moon: Another Story for the holidays, but is attacked by Youma. He gives Ami a prophecy he learned in a vision, then disappears shortly after and isn't seen again.
  • In Sailor Moon Sailor Stars, Ami initially seems to be attracted by Three Lights keyboarder Kou Taiki, who is also very intelligent and a scientist type like herself. However, Ami's idealism and her faith in Sailor Moon clash with Taiki's cold reasoning and dislike towards the Senshi. At one point, when Ami (as Sailor Mercury) is losing a battle against a monster, Taiki actually leaves instead of helping her. They interact quite a lot during the season, but there is no romance, even implied, between them.
  • In the somewhat infamous "Senshi/Shitennou pairing picture" drawn by Naoko Takeuchi, Ami is shown together with Zoisite. The only canon occurences of this pairing are in some of the musicals, but it appears in numerous fanfictions.
