A cram school, or gakushu juku (学習塾), is a special private school which students attend outside of regular school hours. Cram schools are often used by students who want to prepare for high school or university exams, as well as by students who need extra tutoring in particular subjects (like Usagi in Act 2 of the live-action series). They have now become a phenomenon and a very lucrative business across East Asia. Their flourishing existence, to a certain extent, reflects the parents' and students' distrust of the current regular schooling system.

In all versions of the Sailor Moon series, Ami Mizuno attended a cram school; one example is the Crystal Seminar, which was featured in episode 8 of the anime and Act 2 of the manga.
