Manga
Background
Crescent Beam first appeared in act one of the Codename: Sailor V manga, "Sailor V is Born!." After catching Narkissos, a member of the Dark Agency collecting young girls to be his slaves, hypnotizing a fellow student named Haneda, Minako Aino transformed into Sailor V. After engaging the enemy in a fight, Sailor V was instructed by Artemis to use her compact to reveal his true form and defeat him. Sailor V cast Crescent Beam with her compact, destroying Narkissos and returning the hypnotized young girls to normal.
Crescent Beam was never used in the Sailor Moon manga.
Technique
In the Codename: Sailor V manga, Crescent Beam consisted of Sailor V holding her compact to face her enemy, letting its mirrors reflect the enemy's true form, and shouting the words "Crescent Beam." A flash of light would then emit from the compact, killing or wounding her enemy. In some cases she would also wave the compact in in arc above her head while performing the attack.
Anime
Background
Crescent Beam was the first of Sailor Venus's many attacks in the Sailor Moon anime. She first used it in "The Last Sailor Senshi! Sailor Venus Appears" to give Tuxedo Mask a chance to escape from Zoisite's attack. Later in the episode she used Crescent Beam again to break Kunzite's forcefield, saving Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, and Sailor Jupiter.
Technique
Crescent Beam's anime animation began with two crescent moons colliding above Sailor Venus's head. She then raised her right index finger to the now connected crescent moons, brought down her arm, and shot a beam of light from her index finger.
Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon
Sailor Venus had an attack similar to Crescent Beam in the live-action series, but it was never named. It is referred to as Venus Beam.
Video Games
Crescent Beam appeared in many Sailor Moon video games, including Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon (Super Famicom), Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon (arcade), Sailor Moon S: Jougai Rantou!? Shuyaku Soudatsusen (Super Famicom), and Sailor Moon: Another Story (Super Famicom). Since all of these games were based on the Sailor Moon anime and manga series, their renditions of Crescent Beam were based on the anime rather than the Codename: Sailor V manga.
Trivia
- In some episodes of the anime, such as "The Legendary Lake Monster! Usagi's Family Ties," Sailor Venus combined Crescent Beam with another Senshi's attack, in that case Sailor Jupiter's Supreme Thunder. In Sailor Moon: Another Story, this particular combination also appeared and was known as "Crescent Thunder."
