The Disguise Pen was given to Usagi Tsukino by Luna, so she could disguise herself in order to complete a mission more easily. Usagi was, however, known to use it for more personal matters against Luna's wishes.
In addition to changing her appearance, the Disguise Pen also seemed to give her knowledge that went with the assumed form. For example, in episode 42, Luna suggested that Usagi use a speedboat to help her and Minako escape. When Usagi protested that she did not know how to operate one, Luna told her to use the Disguise Pen to become a sailor, which gave her the technical knowledge she needed.
The Pen was also once used by Minako to disguise herself as Sailor Moon when Usagi's identity was suspected in the anime episode "The Pure Heart Stolen! Usagi's Biggest Crisis."

Usagi held up the Disguise Pen and shouted the transformation phrase, including the description of her wanted disguise. Multicolored streams of light shot out of the crystal atop the Pen, then swooped around and back in with a flash of pink light. Thick bands of stars rushed by as the Pen spun rapidly in mid-air, then Usagi appeared silhouetted against a full moon, her hair ruffling in a breeze. In a flash of light, Usagi then appeared in her chosen disguise.
Trivia
- In episode 52, Luna said Usagi was the only one who could use the Disguise Pen, but in episode 102, Minako also used it.
- In the Tagalog dub, Usagi's command phrase for this item was entirely said in English instead of Tagalog.
