Gesen

Gesen was the first of the Seven Great Youma, reincarnated as Crane Game Joe. He was released after Zoisite removed the Red Rainbow Crystal from Joe's body.

During the era of the Silver Millennium, Gesen served Queen Metalia. As one of the Seven Great Youma, he was amongst the Dark Kingdom's most powerful monsters, although it is unknown precisely what form he took during this time. He participated in Metalia's attack on the Moon, but perished along with the rest of the Dark Kingdom when Queen Serenity used the Silver Crystal against their armies. Gesen was not entirely killed, however - the Silver Crystal neutralized the evil powers of the Seven Great Youma by sealing their souls into crystal fragments known as Rainbow Crystals. The souls of the Seven Great Youma were then sent into the future, along with the deceased inhabitants of the Moon Kingdom, to be reincarnated as humans.

Gesen was reincarnated in early twentieth century Japan as the man named Joe, who was famous for his extraordinary crane game skills. He had no memories of his previous life, and the Red Rainbow Crystal within him prevented the evil tendencies of his old form from resurfacing. His magical powers were not repressed entirely, however, and manifested themselves in a telekinetic ability that he used for "raiding" crane games.

Zoisite ambushed Crane Game Joe on a street and attempted to take the Red Rainbow Crystal from him, but was stopped by Makoto. He later attacked him again in a cafe, and though Joe managed to run away, Zoisite soon caught up to him and succeeded in extricating the Rainbow Crystal. Makoto, Sailor Moon, and Luna appeared on the scene just as Joe turned into Gesen. Gesen attacked Sailor Moon, but Makoto lifted him up and threw him into the bushes. Luna realized at that point that Makoto was Sailor Jupiter, told her to transform. Meanwhile, Gesen had grabbed Sailor Moon and also attempted to grab Sailor Jupiter, but she dodged and attacked him. After Gesen had been weakened by Jupiter's Supreme Thunder attack, Sailor Moon healed him with Moon Healing Escalation.

Powers

Gesen could extend a spiked hammer and a crane-like device, useful for grabbing enemies, from his arm.

Video Games

Gesen was one of the monster types that appeared in the video game Sailor Moon: Another Story. Numerous Gesens could be fought during Sailor Mars' story in Chapter Two, outside Lasa village in Nepal. In the fan translation of the game, his name was given as "Game Center."

Trivia

  • "Gesen" is also a Japanese abbreviation for "game center," where crane game machines are commonly found.
  • Gesen was the first Monster-of-the-day in the series to repeatedly say his own name when fighting. This was something that became a regular feature of the MotDs.
