While Zoisite is sent on a mission to retrieve the seven Rainbow Crystals, Usagi meets Makoto Kino, a tough new student.

Summary

Queen Beryl uses the human energy she has obtained to awaken the Dark Kingdom's great ruler. However, the amorphous entity demands more energy, and instructs her to find the Silver Crystal, which is necessary for her complete revival. Beryl tells her that they cannot find the Silver Crystal, but is told to awaken the Seven Great Youma and collect their Rainbow Crystals in order to find the Silver Crystal.

Late for school again, Usagi collides with a gang of thugs. They become aggressive, but she is saved by an unfamiliar girl who beats them up. The girl leaves, telling Usagi to be careful.

Queen Beryl instructs Zoisite and Kunzite to find the Rainbow Crystals. In ancient times, the Dark Kingdom's seven most powerful Youma were sealed into fragments of the Silver Crystal, and have since been reborn as normal humans. She gives Zoisite the Black Crystal, now modified to respond to Rainbow Crystals. Zoisite uses it to identify the first Rainbow Crystal holder.

At school, Usagi sees the girl who helped her. Umino warns her that the girl, Makoto Kino, was allegedly kicked out of her old school for fighting. Usagi doesn't really care, since befriending Makoto gives her the chance to share her lunch.

Usagi and Makoto go to the Game Center Crown. Ami, Rei, and Luna join them, and Luna says that something about Makoto bothers her. They are distracted by the appearance of Crane Game Joe, an expert at crane games. Makoto is suddenly transfixed, because he looks just like her old senpai.

As Joe leaves, Zoisite appears before him. He tries to remove the Black Crystal from Joe, but Makoto interferes and fights off Zoisite. Usagi and Luna see, and come to help, but Joe runs away. Makoto follows him, whilst Luna tells Usagi that she felt an evil aura from the man Makoto was fighting. Deciding that Makoto and Joe are in danger, they follow them.

Joe tells Makoto to leave him alone, and goes into a cafe. Usagi and Luna join Makoto outside. After a while, Joe beckons Makoto inside, and tells her that his crane game skills are due to a psychic power he has had since childhood.

Zoisite appears inside the cafe, and attacks. Joe runs, and is chastised by Usagi for leaving Makoto to fend for herself. Joe replies that he doesn't care about her, and leaves. Zoisite pursues him, whilst Makoto is devastated.

Zoisite finds Joe and removes the Red Rainbow Crystal from him. Sailor Moon and Makoto arrive, but Zoisite flees, leaving Joe, now transformed into the Youma Gesen. He attacks Sailor Moon, but is tackled by Makoto. As she fights, Luna sees the symbol of Jupiter on her forehead. She gives her a transformation pen and tells her to become Sailor Jupiter and help Sailor Moon. Makoto transforms and manages to weaken the monster, but they are unable to kill it as it still has the heart of a human. Luna gives Sailor Moon the Moon Stick, used to purify monsters. Sailor Moon uses Moon Healing Escalation, and Joe is transformed back into his old self. Luna tells Sailor Moon that she must now lead the Sailor Senshi.

Back at the Game Center Crown, Usagi introduces Makoto to Motoki. Once again, she is in love, as he too apparently reminds her of her senpai.
