The magical girl genre (魔法少女) existed long before Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon, but Sailor Moon was the first to seamlessly combine elements from the magical girl and sentai genres. Before that, most magical girl series were based on wish fulfillment, such as growing up quickly and the use of small magical tricks to make wonderful things happen. Sailor Moon paved the way for later magical girl series such as Wedding Peach and Tokyo Mew Mew.

The anime timeline at the Toei Studios Gallery in Nerima, Tokyo lists the 1990s as the "age of the magical girl," with Sailor Moon as the representative work.
