* In early promotional videos for the [[Sailor Moon in North America#English Dub|first English dub]] of the anime presented by [[DiC]], Mamoru was called "Mark."

* He is 16 at the start of the manga and was also planned to be so by Naoko Takeuchi. In the 1st anime, however, he is also confirmed to be a 17 year-old 1st-year University student (equivalent to a beginner college student in America). This is also stated in the anime's drama CDs. Usagi starts the series at 14 in her second year of middle school, but ages to 15 by June 30th. The Japanese school year begins around April 1st, meaning she is not 14 for very long at all; only around a few months.

'''Mamoru Triva from the Sailor Moon (1992) Anime:'''

* Mamoru has been captured and brainwashed the most throughout the series, this is to keep the focus on the female protagonists and the importance of the theme. One possibility of such is showing that not only male characters can save the world, an that they also need and can depend on women. Also likely is because of his importance to Usagi. Instances include:

In the first season, he was kidnapped and brainwashed by the Dark Kingdom from episodes 35-46.

In the first arc of the R season (episodes 47-59), Mamoru had lost his memories following the events of the first season, but there were no actions from the antagonists involved directly, but it still took him the longest to regain his memories.

In the third season, he was kidnapped by Kaolinite in episodes 101-102.

In the fifth season, he was taken control by Queen Nehellenia from episodes 167-172.

He was also kidnapped by Fiore in the Sailor Moon R movie.

*He is the first protagonist to be turned evil when brainwashed by Queen Beryl.

* Sailor Moon/Usagi loved Tuxedo Mask from the start of the series, but initially disliked his civilian form Mamoru because he always called her "Bunhead", a nickname she hates being called by. ("Meatball head" in the original English dub).

* However, both Mamoru and Usagi developed an attraction towards one another, but they handled their feelings immaturely and kept arguing until Episode 34. After Mamoru's capture by the Dark Kingdom, Usagi missed Mamoru teasing her and calling her "Bunhead".

* In the last episode of the first season, Episode 46, when everyone gets their memory erased, Mamoru smiles genuinely after meeting Usagi for the first time. He also smiled genuinely after a few interactions with her at the beginning of the season.

* Throughout the first season, Usagi and Mamoru's relationship goes from sparing jokes at each other’s expense when they bump into each other, to going out of their way to talk to and tease the other person. When they met neither were really emotionally mature enough at that point to figure out an excuse to spend time together and they kept using teasing each other as a reliable way to do it.

* Mamoru brought up "Bunhead" when Rei stopped him on the street to ask him out. He mentioned "Usagi" when talking to Motoki when the conversation wasn't about her but rather about Makoto. She's on his mind from early on.

* Mamoru mostly teased her about her love life. When we look at what a person mostly tease someone about, it can give us an idea about their true intentions behind it. Mamoru teased her saying she could get a boyfriend if she were more lady-like, teasing her about her crush on Motoki twice, and her 'not-so-date' with Umino. Not to mention when Motoki asked Mamoru why he treated Usagi like that, Mamoru seems to half-heartedly lament that things always turn into an argument when they see each other says "I guess we weren’t meant for each other."

* Early on in Season 1, while her relationship with Mamoru was still in its argumentative teasing phase, Usagi showed that she valued Mamoru's words and advice. Such as in Episode 17 and Episode 23. In Episode 17, near the end of the episode, she quotes Mamoru saying “A kind heart and the guts to do what she thinks is right and just, no matter how hard is what makes a girl beautiful." In Episode 23, she agrees with Mamoru's reasoning of why telling Naru the truth about Masato Sanjoin is the right course of action, going against what Motoki said. Usagi went to the arcade to get Motoki to boost her ego, which she knew he would since he's always supportive, and Motoki's platitudes made her happy but didn't inspire her; whereas Mamoru challenging her was what pushed her to actually go out and prove it.

* Usagi was visibly jealous of Rei going out with Mamoru. She tried to set up Rei with Yuuichiro even though she knew that Rei had a thing for Mamoru. Even Ami notices Usagi's feelings toward Mamoru in Episode 31. Luna also teased Usagi of having feelings for Mamoru at the end of Episode 14.

* By Episode 28, it is already made clear to the viewer that Usagi has a crush on Mamoru and that Mamoru does like her too. Usagi, sitting next to Mamoru thinks to herself “But hey he does look pretty handsome," then out loud she says "Oh geez what am I thinking stop it Usagi! Tuxedo Mask is the only one I love!" Later on, Usagi's walk home with Yumemi, Yumemi teased her about how she would've preferred Mamoru walk her home instead and Usagi brushed it off blushing and saying "No way!". Lastly, at the end of the episode, when Mamoru and Usagi visit Yumemi's exhibit, Yumemi shows them the new painting they modeled for, Usagi says "It's beautiful!" and Mamoru says “Well I’d say it looks pretty good considering who the model was.” and looks straight at Usagi, but she thinks he is talking about himself and not her so she reacts annoyed.

* In Episode 34, Usagi recognizes Mamoru walking along the Juban Shopping District; she playfully hits him on the back, “Hey there how you doing guy?” He grunts in pain. She genuinely asks him, "What’s wrong?" He responds, “Oh, hey Bunhead, you're sure cheerful today.” Usagi: “Well, excuse me then, it just so happens that I am a cheerful person all of the time!” and sticks her tongue out, as she does. He responds with a smile, “I hope you’ll always be that way. Take care okay?” and walks away, holding his shoulder. Usagi reacts, confused, “What’s with him? He isn’t acting like himself.”, and notices his shoulder is hurt, “Could he be hurt in some way?” Mamoru probably thought he was going to die in the battle with Zoisite; he was also depressed about not being able to protect Sailor Moon, in what Mamoru thought was his last time seeing Usagi, he was kind and told her that she should always remain her cheerful self. Worried, she follows him. When he discovers this, he is genuinely surprised that she was worried about him. Later, in the elevator ride, he genuinely opens up to her. He tells her about his past, his recurring dream, why he is looking for the silver crystal; things he hasn't told anyone else before. When she tells him, “You know what? Before I thought you were the worst person in the whole wide world. But not anymore, now you’re the second worst.” The way Mamoru looked at her as she blushed saying that, the way he prioritized Usagi’s safety over the rainbow crystals, the way he pushed her out of the way from falling icicles, the way he looked at her when he saw "Bunhead" transform into Sailor Moon, the way he looked at her when he pulled out that rose and transformed into Tuxedo Mask. Mamoru and Usagi fell for each other long before they remembered their past lives as Prince Endymion and Princess Serenity.

* Many people argue that he fell for Sailor Moon and settled for Usagi once he found out they were the same person. It is undeniable that Tuxedo Mask definitely felt strong feelings for Sailor Moon, since he could sense when she was in danger and felt this urge to protect her. However, Tuxedo Mask made an enemy of Sailor Moon and the Sailor Senshi when it came to finding the rainbow crystals. In Episode 34, Mamoru tells Zoisite that he will do so only surrender his rainbow crystals if he promises to not harm Usagi and let her go. This was before he knew that she was Sailor Moon. He prioritized Usagi’s safety over his unwavering personal mission of finding the silver crystal. He didn’t do this for Sailor Moon, he did this for Usagi.

* Even when brainwashed initially by the Dark Kingdom in Season 1 and acting as Endymion, he couldn’t bring himself to hurt Sailor Moon and kept unconsciously helping her succeed.

* After the memory-erasing at the end of Season 1, Mamoru's undying need to protect Usagi literally took physical form as the Moonlight Knight.

* In the Makaiju arc of Sailor Moon R, it wasn't until Mamoru fell in love with Usagi all over again that he was able to remember his past lives.

*After he and Usagi form a couple, he called her "Usako" as an affectionate nickname in the Japanese version and original series. "Usako" translates to "little bunny".

*Mamoru becomes a more laid back person around Usagi, like when he takes her to see the cats at the abandoned house to cheer her up in Episode 91. Usagi asks him, “But are we allowed to go in there?” and he responds, “I don’t know! Who cares!” and hands her a little kitten.

* In Episode 146, Diana mentions how both Neo Queen Serenity and King Endymion fake being sick together to get out of meetings and commitments.

* Many characters comment on the difference in Mamoru and Usagi's personalities and question how Mamoru can stand Usagi at times. Mamoru loves Usagi for who she is, in some ways she is everything he's not and he loves her for that - they complete each other; he keeps her grounded while she lifts him up into craziness. And he adores it. Mamoru has told Usagi: "Never apologize for being yourself.”, "Your strong will is what I love about you most.”, and "I feel better just by being with you!" When Fish’s Eye questioned Mamoru on why he doesn’t want to be with anyone else but Usagi, he responds "She’s full of dreams. That’s why.” In Stars, as Chibiusa is fading from existence due to Nehelenia’s curse on Mamoru, she pleads that he remembers that both him and Usagi have always shared the same dreams.

* Usagi has stated on numerous occasions that her biggest dream is to marry Mamoru. They both dreamed about marrying each other in Sailor Moon R. In Sailor Moon SuperS, Mamoru is targeted for being a beautiful dreamer, same as Usagi. Since Chibiusa stated that Mamoru and Usagi share the same dreams, it is fitting to assume that one of his biggest dreams is to marry Usagi.

* Mamoru supports Usagi and her will for the future. For example: He supported her will to protect Hotaru even though she was possessed by the Messiah of Silence. He respected her wish for the other guardians to not interfere in the fight against Neptune and Uranus at the end of Sailor Moon S, so she could prove herself to them. Finally, he believes in each of the guardian's strength. In his dying words during the Stars arc, he proclaims that the guardians will stop Galaxia, that she doesn't stand a chance. His last words were "Usako".

* In the words of Toru Furuya, the voice of Tuxedo Mask: "He loves Sailor Moon and Tsukino Usagi with his whole heart. I think he’s a very great person."

Personality

in PGSM

Mamoru's personality was very brash at first, especially toward Usagi Tsukino and, to a lesser extent, some of her friends, such as Makoto Kino. It was slowly revealed that his brashness stemmed from the fact that he was orphaned on his sixth birthday in a terrible car crash that left him with his first bout of amnesia, and therefore he had some trouble opening up to others on a deep level. He was often a target for the enemy, and suffered through amnesia many times between the first and second seasons of the anime.

After Usagi and Mamoru's relationship finally became stable in Sailor Moon R, Mamoru's personality became very calm and kind. He was generally supportive of the girls, and did his best to cheer up Usagi and Chibiusa when they were upset, though he also sometimes struggled to keep up with their antics. He also gave the other girls advice as well, for example, Ami Mizuno in episode 97.

Relationships

Mamoru Chiba in
the anime
  • In the anime, he had a brief relationship with Rei Hino, though he did not seem to take it as seriously as Rei did; in fact, he seemed to merely accompany her on dates to keep her happy rather than through any great desire on his part.
  • In the manga and live-action series, Usagi and Mamoru seemed to grow closer even before their memories of their past lives returned, but they did not really begin to show strong affections toward each other in the anime until that point. In the live-action series, Mamoru was engaged to Hina Kusaka, the daughter of his patron who looked after him when he was younger. However, he was not truly in love with her and was merely engaged out of a sense of responsibility to her parents, and eventually found himself falling for Usagi. When Hina realized this, she broke off their engagement.
  • He and Usagi loved each other very much, and in the future they married. In the second season of the anime, their relationship had further challenges to overcome that did not exist in the manga. He lost his memories once again, but Usagi retained hers, and he had her and Natsumi Ginga/An fighting over him. Once that was resolved, he began to have dreams that foresaw Usagi being struck by misfortune should the two of them stay together, which made him break off their relationship. It later turned out this was actually King Endymion testing their love. In the first part of the fifth season, he was also brainwashed by Queen Nehellenia and forgot Usagi.
  • In both the anime and manga he seemed to have dumped Usagi when he left to study in America, as he never wrote or called, and during this time Usagi was pursued by Seiya; as it turned out, though, he had been killed by Sailor Galaxia on his way to America.
  • In the manga, Michiru Kaiou playfully flirted with him, however it did not seem that she or he took this very seriously. Usagi did interpret these actions this way and became briefly depressed, as did Mamoru when he witnessed Haruka Tenou similarly flirting with Usagi.
  • He lavished attention on his future daughter, Chibiusa, often causing Usagi to feel unusually jealous. It was his encouragement that aided Chibiusa in becoming a strong Senshi, and in battling her inner demons as well as the enemies.

Hobbies

Mamoru's hobby was given as reading, and he kept many books in his apartment. He wanted to be a doctor one day and his favorite subject was physics. His favourite sport was track and field events.

Musicals

In the musicals, Mamoru was played by Mizuki Sano, Yuuta Mochizuki, Yuuta Enomoto, Hironari Amano, Hidemasa Edo, Kenji Urai, Yuu Shirota, Gyo Miyamoto, Yuga Yamato, and Mikako Ishii.

Trivia

  • In early promotional videos for the first English dub of the anime presented by DiC, Mamoru was called "Mark."
