in the anime
In the anime, Queen Nehellenia was the queen of an ancient kingdom on an asteroid. She believed her beauty was eternal, but her mirror showed her the form of her future self as an ugly old woman. Shocked and horrified by this, Nehellenia consumed the dreams of her servants and subjects to keep herself young. She watched with envy the prosperity of the Silver Millennium and Queen Serenity, and wanted to make the kingdom her own. As time passed, she learned about the power of the mysterious Golden Crystal, and with it she thought she could replace the Queen of the Moon and possibly control the entire universe.
Nehellenia went to Elysion to get the Golden Crystal, but found that she also wanted to have the boy who guarded it, Helios. She tried to convince him to use the Golden Crystal with her to rule together, but Helios told her the Crystal chose its own bearer, and only those who had a beautiful dream could use it. When Nehellenia tried to get the Crystal, it was protected by golden flames. Then Queen Serenity sealed her away into the darkness of the new moon.
From this dark place, Nehellenia commanded Zirconia and the rest of the Dead Moon Circus from behind her mirror. They attacked Elysion and captured Helios, but his true spirit took refuge in Chibiusa's beautiful dream, leaving the Dead Moon Circus searching for the owner of the dream in which he was hiding. Eventually, Nehellenia captured Sailor Chibi Moon and forced Helios to return to his body, then took the Crystal by force and with its power freed herself from her seal. After a fight with the Sailor Senshi, her true form as an ugly old woman was revealed, and she was drawn back into her seal in the new moon.
Nehellenia was reawakened by Sailor Galaxia in the Stars season, and tried to take revenge on Sailor Moon and the rest of her people. At Galaxia's urging, she shattered her own Dream Mirror, and the fragments fell to Earth, and the pieces that struck people infected them and brought them under her spell, while the loose shards became Mirror Paredri. One of those struck by a mirror shard was Mamoru, and Nehellenia kidnapped him and took him to her castle, challenging Sailor Moon to rescue him.
Sailor Moon went in search of Nehellenia's castle alone, pursued by her friends, and one by one the Sailor Senshi were captured and trapped in mirrors. However, Sailor Moon managed to free them and persuaded the dark queen to give up her anger, and she was sent back to her childhood to start over again.
In the manga, Queen Nehellenia was like the dark mirror image of Queen Serenity, the self-styled "queen" of the dark center of the moon who had existed since the Silver Millennium. She first made herself known at the celebration of Princess Serenity's birth, at which point she confronted Queen Serenity, who used the Moon Stick to seal Nehellenia inside a dark mirror forever. In retaliation, Nehellenia cast a curse that the Moon Kingdom would fall and the princess would never inherit the throne. Due to being sealed inside her mirror world, Nehellenia was able to live on even after the destruction of the kingdom.
Thousands of years later, a solar eclipse allowed her to breach the seal. At this point, she found Sailor Chibi Moon's four future guardians, the Sailor Quartet. She awakened them prematurely and brainwashed them into becoming her minions, the Amazoness Quartet, to aid her in her goals. Nehellenia claimed to be the true Queen of the Moon, that she was the rightful owner and heir of the Silver Crystal and that the planet Earth belonged to the Moon Kingdom, of which she would be the ruler. She set out to get what she wanted, first by taking over the planet from within, by way of capturing the High Priest of Elysion, Helios, and corrupting the land of Elysion with her darkness, and then by sending the Amazoness Quartet to defeat the Sailor Senshi and retrieve the Silver Crystal from Sailor Moon.
As a result of Nehellenia's invasion of Elysion, the captive Helios's spirit fled his body to seek out the maiden he had seen in a vision, whom he knew could help him. Helios told Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon that the only way they could save both Elysion and Earth was to find an item called the Golden Crystal, and awaken its power. During battles with the Amazoness Quartet and their minions, the four Inner Senshi obtained their Sailor Crystals with the help of Artemis, Phobos and Deimos, and the Sailor Power Guardians. At the same time, Hotaru Tomoe grew in age, reawakening as Sailor Saturn and giving the other Outer Senshi their respective Sailor Crystals.
Once the Sailor Senshi had managed to defeat all of the Dead Moon's minions, they finally discovered that the Golden Crystal was hidden inside Mamoru's body, much as the Silver Crystal was within Usagi's. The Senshi then went to confront Nehellenia in Elysion, where she attempted to take the Silver Crystal one last time. The power of the Silver Crystal, combined with that of the newly awakened Golden Crystal, bound together by the love of Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask for one another, prevented this yet again. When defeated by Eternal Sailor Moon using the joined powers of all the Sailor Team, Nehellenia shrivelled into a wizened old woman, and, after being sealed inside her mirror once more, vanished completely.
In the musical Yume Senshi - Ai - Eien ni... Saturn Fukkatsu Hen, Queen Nehellania was played by Kaori Ishikawa, although the actress was only credited for her role as a Lemures. She was also played by Sayu Otsuki in Amour Eternal.
It has been theorized that Queen Nehellenia is named after a Frisian-Roman goddess, more commonly called Nehalennia, who is affiliated with ships and seafaring and has been linked to the "Nether Moon."
- In the anime, Queen Nehellenia was the only main villain whose story began in one season and concluded in the next.
- Queen Nehellenia used "wareware" (我々; we) as a personal pronoun, which is the Japanese equivalent of the royal plural.
