Sailor Moon Drops is a mobile phone game first released in Japan in September 2015, with an English version released in April 2016. It is a match-three puzzle game, where the player has to clear different colored gems from the board in order to achieve the stage's objective, similar to games like Candy Crush. Each stage allows only a certain number of moves with which to complete the objective; any moves left over at the end will earn bonus points.

The player begins with only Sailor Moon as a character, and as they advance through the stages they will see short episodes that follow the story of the series. Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, and Sailor Venus join Sailor Moon as playable characters during the course of the story, as the Sailor Senshi fight the minions of Queen Beryl, while other characters can be obtained through special time-limited events.

The English version currently goes through the end of the Dark Kingdom arc, but the Japanese version includes stages up into the Death Busters arc.

Stage Types

The stage selection map
  • Get the target score! - The player has to reach a certain score to complete the stage. This is the only objective of the first few stages in the game, then all subsequent stages require the player to reach a target score before it is complete, even if they have reached the main objective.
  • Break the barriers! - Barriers appear on the screen that can be broken by clearing the colored piece beneath them. As the stages advance, more pieces will need to be cleared in order to break certain barriers.
  • Defeat the enemy! - A Youma appears on the board and can be "attacked" by clearing specific colored pieces. After the player has made a certain number of moves, the Youma will change and/or reduce the pieces they are vulnerable to, making it more difficult to attack the longer it takes.
  • Collect the Accessories! - The player has to clear away pieces to allow a Transformation Brooch, a bow, and a tiara to fall to the bottom of the screen and be "collected." Different stages will require different numbers of each piece to be collected.
  • Match the pieces! - The player is given a specified amount of certain pieces that must be cleared from the board.
  • Race against time! - The player is given 60 seconds to clear as many pieces as possible. Pieces that add 5 seconds will also appear on the board at random during the stage.
  • Release the Silver Crystals! - Silver Crystals will appear on the board in the original "sealed" form, then as pieces immediately next to it are cleared away, it opens into its "lotus" form and then vanishes.
  • Look for Luna! - The player must clear away opaque barriers on the board to find pictures of Luna hidden behind some of them.
  • Smash the Plates and defeat the enemy! - Like the previous enemy stage, a Youma appears on the board that must be defeated by clearing away specific pieces. However, instead of changing the pieces it is vulnerable to, every few moves this enemy will create barriers blocking off parts of the board.

Special Pieces

Special pieces can be earned by clearing 4 or more pieces in different patterns. When special pieces are swapped with each other, they become even more powerful than when used alone.

  • Stripe - Match 4 pieces in a row. Clearing 4 vertical pieces will give you a horizontal Stripe, which clears one row, while clearing 4 horizontal pieces will give you a vertical Stripe, which clears one column.
  • Popper - Match pieces in a T or L shape. Poppers will clear the 3x3 square surrounding them twice.
  • Paint - Match 6 pieces. Paint pieces will turn other pieces its color. For example, swapping a pink Paint piece with a blue piece will turn all blue pieces pink.
  • Prism - Match 5 pieces in a row. When swapped with another piece, it will remove all pieces of that color, so for example, swapping a Prism with a blue piece will remove all blue pieces from the board.
  • Stripe + Stripe - Clears a row and a column.
  • Stripe + Popper - Clears three rows and three columns.
  • Popper + Popper - Clears a 5x5 square twice.
  • Paint + Stripe - Changes all pieces the color of the Stripe piece into the color of the Paint piece, then turns all pieces that color into Stripe pieces and sets them all off.
  • Paint + Popper - Changes all pieces the color of the Popper piece into the color of the Paint piece, then turns all pieces that color into Popper pieces and sets them all off.
  • Paint + Paint - Turns all pieces on the board to the color of the second Paint piece, then clears them off.
  • Prism + Stripe - Turns all pieces the color of the Stripe piece into Stripe pieces, then sets them off.
  • Prism + Popper - Turns all pieces the color of the Popper piece into Popper pieces, then sets them off.
  • Prism + Prism - Clears all pieces from the board.

Boosters

These special items can be earned from certain stages or in events, or purchased from the in-app store. They each provide help for the player to achieve a stage's objective.

  • Stripe & Popper - Adds a Stripe piece and a Popper piece at the beginning of the stage.
  • Prism - Adds a Prism piece at the beginning of the stage.
  • Luna P Double - Adds two Luna P pieces at the beginning of the stage, each of which will remove the surrounding eight pieces when tapped.
  • Score Enhancer - This makes your score increase faster.
  • Skill Charger - This makes the special ability gauge fill up faster.
  • Piece Crusher - This lets you remove one piece of your choice.
  • Item Catcher - Picks up an accessory.
  • Color Crusher - This removes all pieces of a chosen color.

Collectibles

These are other special items that can be found in the game.

  • Ribbon Keys - Let the player pass the locks on the main maps, getting access to further stages; each lock requires three keys. Ribbon Keys can only be obtained by getting high enough score in the "item" stages (marked with a white lace pattern). The player may instead choose to bypass the lock by paying the in-game currency, or requesting help from other players.
  • Growth Stamps - Collecting 24 of these turns them into a Growth Crystal, that can be used to level up a single character. Complete Growth Crystals can occasionally be found as well.
  • Heart Stamps - Collecting 15 of these puts an extra Heart (life) into the message box, that can be claimed if the player has less than five left. Losing a stage always costs a Heart; they replenish over time, and can also be purchased, or received from other players.
  • Wallpapers - Pictures consisting of nine pieces each. Like Ribbon Keys, these have to be won from "item" stages.
