Chibiusa searches for friends in the twentieth century, and becomes intrigued by Tamasaburou, a young practitioner of the tea ceremony.

Summary

Chibiusa has returned to the 20th century to undergo some training. The Senshi are all confused, and Usagi does not seem very happy to see her. Chibiusa remembers she brought a letter from Neo Queen Serenity and Usagi reaches out her hand but Minako is given the letter instead. Said letter is extremely short and the girls are not amused. Luna reminds them all that Serenity is Usagi after all, to which the latter takes offense. That is not all, however - it turns out the letter is written without using any kanji. The girls and the cats surround Minako and mock Serenity's writing skills, while the embarassed Usagi desperately tries to change the topic. Minako wonders what exactly is Chibiusa supposed to do in the 20th century and Makoto points out that she would not have to come back if she was training to become a proper princess. Rei says that she hopes Usagi's clumsiness will not rub off on Chibiusa, who says that Sailor Mars from the future told her all about it. This triggers Usagi's anger and the two get into a fight. Chibiusa tells the girls not to worry - she is different from Usagi. After the others offer her help, she leaves. Minako then finds an additional note in the envelope, in which Neo Queen Serenity tells Usagi that learning paid off after all. Usagi cries and yells that she hates learning.

Chibiusa happily strolls around the streets of the 20th century Tokyo. She remembers talking to her mother, who tells her that her mission is to make friends, since that will be beneficial to her personal growth. Then, she stands in a park and watches children having fun together. Suddenly, a small doll falls near her feet. She picks it up, then notices a boy and is instantly smitten. Chibiusa asks the boy if the doll belongs to him but he starts acting in a very weird and annoying way, topping the whole thing off with taking off his underwear and traumatising the poor girl in the process. Then, the boy's mother appears, hits him on the head and drags him away. Chibiusa watches them go with tears in her eyes.

After a failed attempt to find a friend, Chibiusa notices another boy, older and more feminine-looking. She finds him cute and follows him but he's suddenly nowhere to be seen. She's disappointed but she hears Mamoru calling her from a near takoyaki stand and she jumps into his arms. Unfortunately, Usagi is there as well, which leads to an argument between the two. Mamoru tries to ease the situation by proposing eating together but the girls now fight over who should feed him. Suddenly, Haruka and Michiru arrive, wearing kimonos. Chibiusa is instantly charmed and says that they look just like their parents. Usagi reminds her that she is her future mother and also that Haruka is actually a woman. This prompts yet another argument but Mamoru quickly puts a stop to it. Michiru mentions that she and Haruka were about to have some tea and ask the three whether they would like to join. Mamoru tries to refuse but Usagi immediately accepts and they all go off, with Usagi rambling on about tea. Suddenly, they all find themselves in a teahouse, much to Usagi's confusion. It also turns out that the owner is Tamasaburou - a tea brewing master and none other than the boy Chibiusa met earlier on the street.

Meanwhile, Professor Tomoe is sitting in his lab, wearing a kimono and preparing tea for himself. He drinks it too quickly, however, and burns his tongue. He has enough of the ceremony but it gives him an idea. He contacts Eudial, who targets Tamasaburou and then leaves with a new Daimon created by the professor.

Back at the teahouse, Tamasaburou quietly prepares tea, while Usagi and Chibiusa suffer because their feet are going numb from sitting. Usagi begs Chibiusa to go home, but she refuses. Haruka hands Chibiusa some dango and she immediately starts chowing them down. Usagi shows her that they are meant to be eaten in a traditional and more reserved way and is amused with her future daughter's embarassement, though Tamasaburou, on the other hand, does not seem to mind at all. Chibiusa gets her revenge by punching Usagi's numb foot, leaving her squirming. Tamasaburou tells the girls that they are welcome to sit in a different position if they like, but Chibiusa insists she is fine.

Tamasaburou then attempts to amuse his guests by balancing a clay bowl on a stick. Haruka explains that the purpose of this act is to relieve the guests' stress and tension, while Michiru adds that the bowl is extremely rare and expensive - it would cost about over ten million yen if one were to buy it. Usagi is shocked at the bowl's value and tries to stop Tamasaburou, afraid of him breaking an object that costs so much money. However, since her feet are still numb, she tips over and crashes with the tea master. Mamoru, Haruka and Michiru lunge forward and manage to save the bowl before realizing they all stepped on Usagi.

Chibiusa is now at a cafe with their future parents and is furious with Usagi. The two are in for another quarrel but Mamoru hushes Usagi and asks Chibiusa about Tamasaburou. She reveals that she came to the 20th century to seek friends. Usagi tells her that she would be more supportive if she knew this from the beginning but Chibiusa says that it would be even worse then. Usagi is angered but Mamoru encourages her and Chibiusa to make up, which they do, albeit reluctantly.

Later that day, Usagi teaches Chibiusa how to move in a kimono but it is not long before another argument arises. Suddenly, a car speeds past them and Usagi recognises the driver as Eudial. The girls see the car enter Tamasaburou's property and Chibiusa rushes to her new friend's rescue. Luna tells Usagi to hurry up, but it turns out she got stuck in the hedge.

Eudial crashes her car in Tamasaburou's garden and takes his pure heart crystal. Chibiusa sees the flash from afar and transforms into Sailor Chibi Moon. She prevents the crystal from being taken and gives Eudial her speech, which she ignores and summons the Daimon Chagama instead. Chibiusa is attacked and manages to catch the crystal but ends up caught herself. Fortunately, she is saved by Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune, who discover that Tamasaburou's heart does not contain a talisman. Eudial backs off and leaves Chagama to fend for herself. The Daimon is annoyed by her behaviour but decides to finish off the Senshi nevertheless. Chibiusa is ready to fight, but Uranus and Neptune have disappeared.

Chibi Moon attempts Pink Sugar Heart Attack. The attack does not work at all at first and when it does, the beam falls short of the Daimon who proceeds to casually sip tea. Chibi Moon moves closer and manages to hit Chagama in the face. Meanwhile, Luna and Usagi arrive at the scene and the latter transforms. Chibiusa chides her for taking so long to appear, but the Daimon interrupts their argument and attacks them with hot tea, while Chibi Moon hits her with Pink Sugar Heart Attack several times between the attacks. The Senshi are backed against a fence, but Tuxedo Mask hits Chagama's cup of tea with one of his roses. The Daimon prepares for her final attack but Sailor Moon defeats her with Moon Spiral Heart Attack. Uranus and Neptune comment on Chibi Moon and watch over Tamasaburou, who has also seen the fight.

Afterwards, Chibiusa is determined to become Tamasaburou's apprentice but she and Usagi see Haruka and Michiru quickly rushing out of his house. It turns out that Tamasaburou, inspired by earlier events, has worn a sailor suit and declared himself Sailor Tamasaburou. Usagi and Chibiusa are shocked and get out of his house, just like Haruka and Michiru did just before.

Episode trivia

  • Shinnosuke (the boy who dropped his pants), his "elephant", his 'Chin-chan' doll, and his mother's appearance were all references to another TV Asahi anime - Crayon Shin-chan. Shinnosuke was voiced by the same voice actress as Shinnosuke "Shin-chan" Nohara from that anime, and his mother was voiced by the same VA as Shin-chan's mother. The Sailor Moon voice cast returned the favour in episode 109 of Crayon Shin-chan, in which Aya Hisakawa, Emi Shinohara, and Kae Araki appeared as "Sailor Iyaan," "Sailor Bakaan," and "Sailor Mufoon," respectively.
  • The incident with Shinnosuke was also changed in the original English dub of the episode. In that version, he showed Rini his Sailor Moon underwear, despite the fact that his underwear was in his hand at the end.
  • In the first English dub, when the girls looked at Neo-Queen Serenity's note they described the writing as "symbols," and Mina said that she had to read it "with [her] imagination" because it was completely illegible. This was possibly because the note was shown on screen and the kana would have been unfamiliar to English-speaking children. In the Mexican dub, Mina simply said that it had a lot of spelling errors, and the second English dub portrayed the letter as poorly written.
