Organizing the character section[edit]

Assuming the English version is going to have all of the character events from the Japanese version, this section is going to become a complete mess pretty fast, especially once further season maps are released. One, each map is going to introduce its own form of Sailor Moon, and those are considered separate characters with their own attacks. Two, characters unlockable through events include more than just the senshi civilian forms (even in the English version already, with the recent Serenity event), so there's going to be a lot of them. Three, the Japanese version has had at least one "repeat" event (for Minako), so if this becomes the case for the English version as well, I'm not sure there's any real need to list the characters in the "release order".

What I'm suggesting is further splitting the section so that the event-only characters are listed separately, and core characters are grouped by maps on which they're obtained (it appears the maps in the Japanese version can be played separately without being completed in order, so this would make sense). This can wait, since the second map hasn't been released yet, but something really needs to be done about this list, because multiple Sailor Moons alone will make it confusing. Thoughts? --YnK (talk) 11:29, 26 July 2016 (MST)

You're right about it not being limited to civilian forms of Senshi, so I took that part out. As for the rest, I think that we have plenty of time to consider before it becomes a problem, considering how slow things are moving. I mean, we don't even have the second map yet and they're only doing character events once a month or so. I'll split off the core characters and the event characters, but otherwise I don't see a problem arising for quite some time. Kerochan no Miko (talk) 13:28, 26 July 2016 (MST)
The split list looks nicer. One more question, though. In-game, the un-transformed senshi characters are listed as, e.g., "Usagi Tsukino (School Uniform)". This is because there are going to be other versions of them eventually. Now, as you noted, the character events aren't released often, so it'll probably be a while until we get multiple entries for one senshi, but still -- that's what they're called in-game, so should the character headers reflect this? --YnK (talk) 05:01, 28 July 2016 (MST)
Hrm. I have mixed feelings on that, tbh, but you're right, it is what the character info panels say. I'm going to say my opinion is that we should leave it as it is until such time that differentiation becomes necessary, but it isn't a very strong opinion, so if you think we need to change the headers then go for it. Kerochan no Miko (talk) 16:40, 28 July 2016 (MST)
I guess this'll wait until the R map (second Sailor Moon), then, unless they run an event for one of the alternate characters before that. We might eventually need to tinker with the article intro to make it less specific about which characters join the team in the main game, too, especially since some characters on later maps won't even be in their senshi forms. They're all listed below anyway.
Any other info that needs to be added to the article? --YnK (talk) 07:16, 29 July 2016 (MST)
It is part of the nature of a wiki in an active fandom that we will eventually need to change all manner of things. But as Minako would say, we'll burn that bridge when we come to it, and there's no need to stress in advance, especially over what will likely be very minor rewrites. Kerochan no Miko (talk) 17:23, 29 July 2016 (MST)
Hey, I'm just looking for ways to improve the description. A casual reader is probably just going to wonder what the heck those "events" are. Or how you're supposed to gain levels in a puzzle game. --YnK (talk) 05:08, 30 July 2016 (MST)
If you feel there are things that could be expanded upon, there is nothing stopping you from doing so. Kerochan no Miko (talk) 08:14, 30 July 2016 (MST)
Easy for you to say. While I do think some of the mechanics could use a better description, doing this has the potential for further turning the article into the game's unofficial manual (especially if done by someone addicted to it...), which is not the point. I mean, it's just a puzzle game. For now, I'm going to make a section on the (non-character) collectibles, since this will also explain the character levels, but I still have no idea what to do with the events - they are technically similar enough to get a general description, but... --YnK (talk) 08:50, 30 July 2016 (MST)
Er...it's kind of the point of a wiki to contribute what you feel is missing from articles. So yeah, it is pretty easy for me to suggest that people fulfill the purpose of a wiki, instead of me just writing everything...? Kerochan no Miko (talk) 09:05, 30 July 2016 (MST)
...As long as you're fine with probably having to edit it again to remove any excessive info...
EDIT: Should the term "level" be changed to "stage" to match the in-game text? --YnK (talk) 09:45, 30 July 2016 (MST)
If the information in an article is incorrect/doesn't match, then yes, it needs to be changed. Kerochan no Miko (talk) 09:58, 30 July 2016 (MST)

I actually deliberately left out sections on collectibles and the obstacles, because I thought it would make the article more like a game guide. I personally don't see any need for them - even the descriptions of the types of levels I thought was kind of iffy. I really don't think we need to do more than make a brief mention that such things exist in the game. Kerochan no Miko (talk) 13:28, 30 July 2016 (MST)

...*This* is why I asked.
Let's be honest, a detailed article on a puzzle game is always going to look a bit like a guide (IMO, the "Special Pieces" section is pretty much a guide). Look at Kurukkurin: less sections, but still mostly this type of info. I could try to rewrite it to look less like a collection of lists, though. --YnK (talk) 13:49, 30 July 2016 (MST)
Yes, there is a line to be drawn between "informational" and "user manual", and I think having a collection of just lists is stepping over that line. While I would like this article to be useful (because otherwise having the article at all is useless), it by no means needs to be comprehensive, and I would like to try to preserve the more academic tone of the wiki. I'm going to do some edits and see what I can come up with. Kerochan no Miko (talk) 19:59, 30 July 2016 (MST)
Looks better now. Can be further simplified (I was actually going to use Wikipedia's article on Candy Crush Saga as a layout reference), but this is already an improvement.
Still don't like the character section. There's no real need for the subsections for each since they only have two attacks, with the second one being an upgrade. I would leave in the Story/Event subheaders, and then do something like this:
  • Sailor Moon: Moon Tiara Action move clears eight gems, blocks, barriers, etc. It upgrades to Moon Healing Escalation, which clears sixteen.
...the only problem being that I don't have Minako and my Serenity is far from reaching max level, so I can't add their second move. --YnK (talk) 22:14, 30 July 2016 (MST)
The subsection thing is often used on this site for easy readability. I think not having it would look messier. Also please don't use Wikipedia as a reference for how to do things here. Kerochan no Miko (talk) 09:34, 31 July 2016 (MST)
It does improve navigation via table of contents, but as for readability... I understand avoiding large bulks of text, but two-line subsections seem like overdoing it. Kurukkurin page does just fine with a simple list, which, IMO, actually looks more like an informative article, as opposed to a game guide. In fact, this sort of "characters and their powers list" (from here) looks very much like part of a manual this kind of game would have. (Do we have any style guidelines for videogame articles?) --YnK (talk) 10:24, 31 July 2016 (MST)
I disagree. I also find it odd that you were arguing above for a lot of expansion of the article and now you want to cut it down. And no, there are no style guidelines for video game articles, mostly because the games are so varied (as is the amount of information about them). Kerochan no Miko (talk) 10:40, 31 July 2016 (MST)
I certainly do like having more info in articles when appropriate, but I also think they should be somewhat consistent (taking into account different game genres, of course). Drops article is growing fast because the game is new and freely available. How much info is necessary, though? Somebody who owns some of the old Sailor Moon games along with their manuals could've improved articles on those games ages ago (with official sources!), but there just isn't any kind of indication of what should or shouldn't be added - most of those pages look fine as they are, so it's hard to tell whether the information is plainly missing, or it was cut down deliberately to fit the style. --YnK (talk) 11:15, 31 July 2016 (MST)
The point being that people don't own the old games, nor the manuals. Or if they do, they aren't posting them online. It's hard to add information to an article when said information doesn't seem to exist anywhere - but that's a discussion that isn't relevant to this article's talk page. Kerochan no Miko (talk) 11:44, 31 July 2016 (MST)
Most people don't/aren't. Some do. Where do you think the Japanese attack names in the articles come from? (I even added to some of those myself.) My point is the fact that 99% of Sailor Moon games are ancient is not a reason to assume that only the few articles on the newer ones will ever get expanded, so having some kind of a standard would be helpful.
Back on topic, are the more "generic" features deliberately left out of the description (like the fact that you technically have limited lives)? --YnK (talk) 13:05, 31 July 2016 (MST)
Certainly a standard would be helpful. But considering all the other high-priority stuff to do on this wiki, I have no plans to write a style guideline for one of the least-accessed sections of the site any time soon.
