Tokusatsu (特撮), abbreviated from tokushu satsuei (特殊撮影; special shooting), is the Japanese term for special effects, but is often used to describe shows which make extensive use of those effects. Movies such as Godzilla and Gamera as well as television shows like Ultraman and Power Rangers can be considered tokusatsu shows. Such works are also heavily influenced by their Western counterparts throughout the decades, such as the British ITV's The Thunderbirds and numerous Hollywood fx movies.

The live-action version of Sailor Moon, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, is also considered a tokusatsu show as well as a TV drama.
