Tokyo (東京; lit. "Eastern Capital") is the modern-time capital of Japan and the largest city in the country. It is also one of the largest cities in the world.[1] During the Edo (江戸) Period, it was called Edo, and was where the Shogunate (幕府; lit. "tent government"), the de facto ruling junta before the Meiji (明治) Period, was seated while the nominal capital was still in Kyoto (京都; meaning "capital metropolis"), where the figure head emperor's court was seated. When the Meiji Emperor (明治天皇) moved his court to Edo, he changed its name in the fashion of Chinese capitals like Beijing (northern capital), Nanjing (southern capital) and the ancient Xijing (western capital).

Sailor Moon is set mostly in Tokyo, specifically Minato-ku, one of Tokyo's 23 Special Wards. Within Minato-ku, the district of Azabu-Juuban provides most regular locations (including Azabu-Juuban Junior High and Hikawa Shrine), with several locales from surrounding areas (such as Minako's junior high in Shiba Koen, and Tokyo Tower in Shiba Park) making occasional appearances as well.
