Cosplay (コスプレ), a combination of the words "costume" and "play," is an activity wherein fans create costumes and dress up as characters from anime series, movies, video games, etc. Although it first became popular in Japan, it is now practiced by fans in many parts of the world. In Japan, there are also jobs where the workers are required to cosplay, such as cashiers in manga shops, waitresses in cafes, product promoters in the streets or other venues, workers in the porn industry, etc. Cosplayers are often found at conventions, movie openings, and other fan events.
