Talk:Sailor Moon (manga)

"新装版" is "shinsouban", not "shinzoban". Move my comment, sign it for me, delete it, whatever, I'm not interested enough to learn how this works, just thought that was an important mistake.

Corrected, but you could've done that yourself. ; ) --210 (talk) 08:43, 4 October 2014 (MST)

This is the sound of a man writing an article he doesn't know much about. There seem to be multiple sources of chapter titles, all of them slightly different from each other. Someone who knows the manga better than me should take a look at them... and preferably expand on the rest of the article. Dooky 22:36, 27 May 2006 (MST)

I've updated the titles after finding a Japanese list of titles. Unfortunately I've had to romanise instead of translate, because many of the titles contain the same thing in both Japanese and English. Dooky 19:02, 31 May 2006 (MST)

Do we want to link to Parallel Sailor Moon here?--WikiSysop 05:06, 3 June 2006 (MST)

Yes... along with all the other bits and bobs like the Chibiusa picture diaries and Exam battles. I just wasn't sure how to name them given the naming conventions already established here. Dooky 05:47, 3 June 2006 (MST)

I can't find anywhere else to put this question so I'll just dump it here for now... Apart from the real manga, Toei released a monthly(?) comic book made of stills from the anime with added word balloons (it's usually referred to as the Sailor Moon "anime manga", "photo manga", "TV manga" or such) that was published in many other countries - I have issues of it from Sweden, Germany, and Hungary, and have seen an Italian edition of it. My question is, if WikiMoon has an article about this thingy, what's it called? (And if not, what should it be called?) --Rosen 04:24, 9 August 2006 (MST)

Good question. As far as I know we don't have any articles on it. The "anime manga" would probably be most appropriate.--WikiSysop 05:08, 9 August 2006 (MST)
If you check out this page, they're called "Nakayoshi anime books". I'm not sure of the webmaster's credibility, but he/she seems to be quite informed about Sailor Moon. --Secretss 14:42 16 April 2007 (SGT)

Does it make sense, in any way, to have each Arc have a page? I know it seems silly, but the way the anime page is set up, it's easy to direct links to a particular season. If we have a page that indicates and event occuring in a particular arc of the manga, right now our only choice it to link to the entire manga page.--Sakky 09:00, 12 October 2006 (MST)

I was kind of thinking about that - if nothing else, it would be nice to have anchor links to each arc, just so we don't have to link to the main page and let people scroll to find where "Dream" and "Stars" start. Kerochan no Miko 09:42, 12 October 2006 (MST)
Yes! Exactly. Anchors would also work well, I just don't know how to make them. ^^;--Sakky 10:35, 12 October 2006 (MST)
Also, what are the arcs called? I am not sure about the first one is, the Dark Moon Arc, Death Busters Arc, Dream Arc and Stars Arc??--Sakky 09:58, 19 October 2006 (MST)
I know the last three are Infinity, Dream, and Stars, but I'm not sure about the first two. Michie 13:10, 19 October 2006 (MST)
I think the second one is the Black Moon arc, and the first is simply Sailor Moon (though some fans call it the Dark Kingdom arc). Elanorea 13:15, 19 October 2006 (MST)

Okay, I reformatted the page a little and added some anchors, so people can link directly to the arcs. I think it looks a little nicer, at least... Kerochan no Miko 23:22, 22 November 2006 (MST)

Should we include pictures of the cover art as well? I think that would spice up the page. Also, should there be a link here to the artbooks? --Secretss 14:57 16 April 2007 (SGT)

I think the pic idea is good, & I've linked to the Artbook article. --210 00:12, 16 April 2007 (MST)
Where would we put pictures of the cover art? Kerochan no Miko 04:12, 16 April 2007 (MST)
I'm thinking [this].[Click here] to view the rest of the images. In addition, since volume 11 is not mentioned in the main body, I suggest placing volume 11, together with volumes 13 and 14 of the shinzobun, at the top (where they are briefly mentioned) or at the short stories section. We can add a note at the top stating that the cover art for the old edition is on the left side and the shinzobun cover art is on the right. The images in the screenshots are poorly done as I want to just get my idea through first. If this idea gets the approval I can do a better set of images, unless someone else wants to do that first =P. The cover art can be gotten [here]. --Secretss 10:42, 19 April 2007 (SGT)
Not terribly attractive, IMHO. Kerochan no Miko 20:36, 18 April 2007 (MST)
I didn't expect to have so many images in the article. Since it's just for decorative purpose only, I think 1 or 2 (3 at most) is good enough. --210 03:47, 19 April 2007 (MST)
Or possibly just the first volume of each story arc? Like volume 1, volume 4, volume 7 and so on. Or, if minimalism is the way to go, just the cover art of the volume 1s of both editions at the top of the page. I don't know how to add pictures though. Another way could be to add a little comment in a trivia section linking to the list of cover art (the link I provided up there). Then there's no need for pictures on the page. --Secretss 23:23, 19 April 2007 (SGT)
It's not so much minimalism as it is making an attractive informational article. The emphasis here is on the information, not the illustrations. It might be better to make book articles for the various manga volumes, old and new. Kerochan no Miko 08:40, 19 April 2007 (MST)

Manga link[edit]

Do we really need an article about manga in general? I personally don't think so. Kerochan no Miko 17:25, 30 March 2007 (MST)

Ok, the link will be added only if there'll ever be someone writing such article. --210 17:58, 30 March 2007 (MST)

Chapter Titles[edit]

Addressing this issue here: yes, I know many of the chapters have untranslated titles. This is not an error, nor is it a bad thing. They will stay that way. Kerochan no Miko 15:18, 10 April 2011 (MST)

May I ask for a reason why they will stay? While it is not an error or a bad thing, this is an English forum so I think it would be best to have the titles translated, or at least include both the romanized titles and the English titles in the title. Personally I think they should all be translated though, because not only are some of them translated with no romanization already and it would be nice to create consistency, but the anime episode titles and the live-action series episode titles are all translated (and with no rōmaji) so why shouldn't the manga titles? I think it's always best to have actual translations when possible not just the romanizations. Not to mention while rōmaji is a bit better than just using the actual characters; it still doesn't make it anymore understandable so if we leave rōmaji we almost might as well just leave the actual Japanese characters and not even bother romanizing them or translating them at all.
Now I will leave them alone unless I end up getting approval, but I would at least like an actual reason why we should leave them instead of creating consistency within the manga page and within other media pages. (if it's not too much to ask) 1dbad 17:27, 11 April 2011 (MST)
Because (as I said elsewhere) those are the titles of the chapters in the manga and I see no reason to not have them the names of the titles in the manga. You feel that all of the titles should be translated, but that's simply not how we do things here. There is currently consistency in that we keep the original Japanese titles for all of them, so changing them would make us inconsistent. So this is how they are and this is how they'll stay. Period, end of story. Kerochan no Miko 19:50, 11 April 2011 (MST)
So? Translations of the titles are still titles too and are still the titles of the chapters in the manga, just in English. A translation does not change that in the least unless it's changed around to be something completely different. And just because the translated titles aren't literally in the manga itself doesn't mean anything. That's because Sailor Moon is a Japanese manga so it's in Japanese so it can be read and enjoyed by a Japanese audience. That doesn't mean that proper translations of the Japanese titles aren't the titles of the manga because they still are, just in a different language. And that's not true. Almost everything I've seen here is in English and any Japanese terminology, titles, ect. is translated, so how would translating the chapter titles into English be any different than that? And okay, I will give you that I was wrong and noticed by going through them there is consistency there, but if we translated the original Japanese titles for all of them that wouldn't mean they weren't the original Japanese titles. That makes no sense. They still would be, just in English so English-speakers could understand them. And it wouldn't be inconsistent if we went through and changed them all, which was something I'd be willing to do. And even if it's consistent within it's own section, it's still inconsistent with a lot of other parts of the site, such as the anime and live-action section. The Live-Action and Anime don't have their titles in romaji, so I don't get why we're being different with the manga since that creates a bit of inconsistency with the site as a whole. 1dbad 23:40, 11 April 2011 (MST)
1dbad, I'm not discussing this with you because it's not up for discussion. The titles as they stand are the exact titles of the manga chapters in Japanese. None of them have partially translated titles - if there is a word in English in the title, that's because it was already in English in the original title. On this wiki, as per the style guidelines, we use the original Japanese terms for everything whenever possible. Thus, they will not be changed. This is not something you can debate. And no, I'm not going to talk about this with you any more. Stop asking. Kerochan no Miko 01:00, 12 April 2011 (MST)
Okay then. And like I said, I already know there is no partially translated titles because I realize that was a mistake on my end already. (said it in my long reply on my Talkpage) I already know how romanji works, so I'm familiar with the English words thing too. And I've noticed that and quite like that, but should that really go to the extent of using Japanese words too? We'd still be using the Japanese terms if we translated them, just they would be in English. Kind of like how using Soldier instead of Senshi is still using the Japanese term because both words have the same meaning. And okay, I'll stop asking and talking about it if you won't. This will be my last post about it unless something warranting a reply comes up in possible future comments. 1dbad 01:45, 12 April 2011 (MST)
When I say stop asking, that means stop asking. Kerochan no Miko 01:46, 12 April 2011 (MST)
Err, got it. ^^; Of course I realize that I hadn't stopped after I had posted that. 1dbad 02:06, 12 April 2011 (MST)

Page Move Proposals[edit]

Since this involves multiple pages, and I have two proposals, I'll just put it here instead of spamming a lot of talk pages.

1) The articles for manga chapters in the Infinity, Dream, and Stars arcs don't have "Act #" at the beginning, but all of the title pages in the manga do have them. I propose that the articles be changed accordingly, so for example Yume 1 - Nisshoku Dream would change to Act 34 Yume 1 - Nisshoku Dream to match the manga title page.

2) On the articles that do have "Act #" in them, I propose removing the - between the act number and the chapter title, as they don't appear in the manga. For example, moving Act 1 - Usagi - Sailor Moon to Act 1 Usagi - Sailor Moon to match the manga chapter title page. Kerochan no Miko 18:09, 10 April 2011 (MST)

Okay Cartwheelingfiesta 19:28, 10 April 2011 (MST)
Great idea! 1dbad 17:27, 11 April 2011 (MST)
First arc done, four to go. Silver 09:27, 12 April 2011 (MST)
Nice job - otsukare. ^^ --210 10:44, 12 April 2011 (MST)
Silver, when I said that I would move them, I said that I would move them. Please don't. Kerochan no Miko 13:35, 12 April 2011 (MST)
Oh. Ok, I didn't see that other proposal on the talk page of Act 4, sorry. I wasn't going to move all of the proposed pages anyway, just the first arc to save you a bit of work. But I didn't know you had to be the one to move all of them just because you made the proposal... is because of that that you asked me to not move them? Silver 14:04, 12 April 2011 (MST)
Because I made the proposal, because some of them have other name changes in order (like Act 4 did), because some of them have links to protected pages that I need to change anyway (like the featured article page), there are a lot of reasons. But basically, I said I was going to move them, so I'm going to move them. If you want to help, please ask. Kerochan no Miko 14:10, 12 April 2011 (MST)
Sure. I will. Silver 14:30, 12 April 2011 (MST)
Thanks. I appreciate that you wanted to help, but in this case it's not needed. Kerochan no Miko 14:37, 12 April 2011 (MST)

Side Stories[edit]

Aaaaaand while I'm revamping manga articles anyway, it looks like the Picture Diary stories were just called "Chibiusa Enikki" in the original but the re-release gave them full titles. I need to look into it some more, but... it's kind of inconsistent right now, with some with the extra title from the re-release and some without. I think we should probably change them all to have "Chibiusa's Picture Diary - [insert extra title here]" and remove the numbers, since they weren't in the titles at all. Probably the same thing with the Exam Battles, since they seem to be similar. Any thoughts? Kerochan no Miko 22:47, 10 April 2011 (MST)

What was your reasoning for naming that in the first place? Cartwheelingfiesta 23:15, 10 April 2011 (MST)
...I didn't name them that in the first place. Kerochan no Miko 23:20, 10 April 2011 (MST)
oh sorry, i just looked at the history and your username was at the bottom of it... Cartwheelingfiesta 23:25, 10 April 2011 (MST)
I created some of the manga chapter articles after someone else listed the manga chapter titles on this article. But I didn't decide on the names, nor did I create all of them. I wasn't even an admin yet back then. Kerochan no Miko 23:38, 10 April 2011 (MST)
All I meant was, from my understanding of the history you created 5/7 of the articles in question... and I assumed you knew what you were doing at the time, thats all Cartwheelingfiesta 23:54, 10 April 2011 (MST)
If I'd known the reasoning behind it to begin with I wouldn't need to bring it up for discussion, now would I?
Do you have any input or suggestions on the matter? Kerochan no Miko 02:45, 11 April 2011 (MST)
Oh, so that's what happened to it... I noticed the inconsistency in the titles last year but I forgot to mention it and anyway, I didn't even know it was because of the change of name in the re-release. Ok, I agree with the proposal, and with the other two above. Silver 05:53, 11 April 2011 (MST)
I always kind of wondered at it but never bothered to look into it because I was working on other stuff. ^^; Also I take back what I said about the Exam Battles: they do have full titles and whatnot in the manga, so we're good there. I think I'll just change the Picture Diary ones so they have "Chibiusa's Picture Diary" plus the reprint titles in order to differentiate them. Kerochan no Miko 14:46, 11 April 2011 (MST)

Okay, I moved all the picture diary chapters. I'll get to the other proposal when I have some more free time, since that's going to take a while. ^^; Kerochan no Miko 03:09, 12 April 2011 (MST)

Question Regarding The Chapter Pictures[edit]

I have some HQ scans of up to volume 7 of the re-print manga on my laptop at the moment (and will get all of them before too long here), and I would be willing to crop them to the exact same panels on the respective chapter pages if anyone would like that. Not that there is anything wrong with the ones we have now, but these scans are just so much HQ that I think it would be good since it'd look nicer. I could give some examples so you guys could see what you think and decide from there. Just note that if you guys do like them enough to do this though, that I'll need someone to put the pictures up for me since I don't know how to do that and would prefer not to try for worry of messing something up. Or if someone could give me a page on how to do it that'd work too, but I think the best choice would be for someone else to do this. (granted we do decide to do this)

If you guys like things as they are though then that's fine too. ^^ Just thought I'd offer since I have them. ~ 1dbad 02:16, 12 April 2011 (MST)

I have HQ scans of the entire reprint manga, it's just not been a high priority for me to change the images already in the articles. I'll get around to it eventually. If you want to know how to add images in general, just check the images guide. Kerochan no Miko 02:19, 12 April 2011 (MST)
Wow! I only have up to volume 7 as of right now. I've been getting them from a friend since she's been busy uploading them on her website anyway, and she usually sends them to me a bit before she uploads them on the site. Right now her current rate is one volume a week, which is why I don't have them all yet. I'd really love to see HQ scans of all of the re-print manga though, could you share? If not it's okay since my friend will get them to me eventually, but with my lack of patience if you could share I'd love to see the ones for the remainder. And that makes sense; I can see how it's not a high priority right now. Since you'll get around to them eventually I'll go ahead and leave them alone. And thanks! That really helps!
EDIT: This is actually a week or so late, but I finally have HQ scans for the rest of the volumes. Turns out my friend decided to be AWESOME the other day and finished putting up the last 5 volumes all at once. Just thought I should let you know so you know I don't need info on where you got yours from anymore. 1dbad 04:05, 13 April 2011 (MST)
I still have them and I've actually been updating the pictures in the articles. I think I'm up to 10 now. Kerochan no Miko 00:15, 26 April 2011 (MST)

60 Acts[edit]

Are there plans or ideas to update the list to include what the new act numbers are for the re-release? I didn't realize until today that they changed. :O --Sakky 11:11, 20 June 2011 (MST)

No plans because I had no ideas, pretty much. It should be mentioned, I'm sure, but.... Kerochan no Miko 11:33, 20 June 2011 (MST)
Yeah, it seems kind of tough since it's not like they are just renumbered, the contents actually shift. It's becoming confusing when I go to cross reference something. xD Maybe we should have two manga lists, one for the original and one for the re-release but have the re-release list just not link to summaries? --Sakky 12:30, 20 June 2011 (MST)
Hm, I could always put a table under each story arc with the titles for the original and the titles for the re-release in two columns like that— that might work. I'll play with it a little and see what I can come up with. Kerochan no Miko 15:09, 20 June 2011 (MST)

This is way in the future since it wouldn't happen until Kodansha is finished releasing the English manga, but I'm starting to wonder if maybe we shouldn't rearrange the manga chapter articles to fit the re-release rather than the original chapters. Either way it's going to be confusing with the numbering, but with the 60-chapter setup becoming more common than the 52-chapter one, it might be best to go with that instead. It would involve a ton of work, though, so I'm not sure it'd be worth the effort, but... it would be a lot more organized and neater, IMHO. Something to consider in the far future, I guess. Kerochan no Miko 21:18, 18 January 2012 (MST)

English Chapter Titles[edit]

The first volume of the English manga is out now, and honestly, I think we should keep our chapter article titles named the way they are now for a couple of reasons:
1) The articles on this wiki match the chapters in the original release of the manga, and the Kodansha English manga is going with the shinzoban, so they won't align correctly.
2) The translations of the chapter titles sometimes translate the Japanese words and sometimes drop them. "Kamenbutoukai MASQUERADE" became "Masquerade Dance Party" but "Tuxedo Kamen TUXEDO MASK" is just "Tuxedo Mask." I would really like to preserve the entire title in articles even if Kodansha didn't want to in the translations.
That being said, I definitely think we need translations in the main manga article, probably in another column next to the shinzoban titles. Kerochan no Miko 12:23, 23 September 2011 (MST)

[Re: "Kamenbutoukai MASQUERADE"] Actually the "Kamen" part also hasn't been translated. --210 01:12, 19 January 2012 (MST)
I think "Dance Party" was their version of a translation of "Kamenbutoukai" which is one of the reasons I dislike the Kodansha chapter title translations. Kerochan no Miko 08:26, 19 January 2012 (MST)
They seem to hate the word "kamen" & always ignore/omit it. : P --210 08:45, 19 January 2012 (MST)

Manga Article Revisions[edit]

Unless anyone has any particular objections, I plan to start revising the manga articles so that they align with the shinsouban chapter numbers (and Crystal episodes) rather than the original chapters. I'm also planning to use the Japanese titles and not the Kodansha translations, since 1) the latter were weirdly inconsistent and 2) it'll match the previous system better. So yeah, if anyone has objections, raise them now, because otherwise I'm going to start working on it whenever I have time. Kerochan no Miko (talk) 20:06, 11 March 2015 (MST)
