DiC was the company responsible for producing the English dub of the first and R seasons. It was founded as "DIC Audiovisuel" in Luxembourg in 1971; the title originally stood for "Diffusion, Information et Communication." The company was bought out by Andy Heyward in 1986, at which point the headquarters moved to the United States. Some of their other shows include Inspector Gadget, The Real Ghostbusters, Rainbow Brite, and Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sailor Moon was not DiC's first experience with the anime genre: in 1981, DiC made Ulysses 31 with Tokyo Movie Shinsha, and the following year the company teamed with Studio Pierrot and NHK to produce Esteban, Child of the Sun. The latter was aired in the U.K. and on Nickelodeon in the U.S. as The Mysterious Cities of Gold, and both shows were aired around the world. In addition, many of DiC's animated series made for Western consumption were animated by Japanese staff, though not technically considered "anime."

As of June 20, 2008, DiC merged with The Cookie Jar Group to form one large cartoon company known as Cookie Jar Entertainment. Cookie Jar was purchased in 2012 by DHX Media.
