Phobos and Deimos were Rei Hino's guardian crows, named for the two moons of Mars.
In the anime, Phobos and Deimos were two crows that lived at the Hikawa Shrine. They seemed to have some ability to sense evil, and would attack those who threatened Rei.
In the manga and Sailor Moon Crystal, Phobos and Deimos had a much larger role. The two of them could assume human form, and did much more to help Rei. In Act 41 and Sailor Moon Eternal, they gave her the Mars Crystal, allowing her to transform into Super Sailor Mars. In Act 52, they encountered Sailor Lead Crow, whom they knew from their home planet of Coronis, where they all trained together before Phobos and Deimos were chosen to become companions of Sailor Mars. They were killed by Lead Crow, who took their Star Seeds.
Phobos and Deimos were almost identical in their humanoid forms, with the only difference being the color of their clothing. In the artbook Original Picture Collection Volume IV, Phobos was in purple clothing and Deimos in red, but in Original Picture Collection Volume V, the colors were reversed. In Sailor Moon Crystal, Phobos wore red.
In the live-action series, Phobos and Deimos only appeared once, as CG crows in Act 3.
In the musical Sailor Moon S - Usagi Ai no Senshi e no Michi, Death Ru disguised himself as Phobos in order to trick Ami. In that musical, it was implied that Phobos and Deimos were just crows.
Mythology[edit]
In Greek mythology, Phobos and Deimos were the embodiments of fear and terror, respectively. They were twin brothers and the sons of Ares, the Greek equivalent of the Roman war god Mars.
