Just noticed that the release date here is given as May 1993. What's the source for this? All my sources give the 5th of December 1993 as the date (all three of the movies were released around Christmas). ==Trivia==
Right now, the trivia section is trying to establish when in canon this movie occurred. This is certainly within our brief. A few notes:
*Sailor Moon's use of Moon Tiara Action does not, in my opinion, affect the matter one way or the other. We know she lost the ability at the start of the season, but it's never revealed when it came back. She's cheerfully using it at the start of Sailor Moon S, so I see no reason why it couldn't have returned late on in the R season.
*The movie must occur after episode 77 (in which Usagi and Mamoru reconcile) and before episode 81 (at which point the Senshi go to the future, Chibiusa becomes Black Lady and things don't let up until Chibiusa returns home). This is probably as far as we can go without slipping into speculation; although I personally place it around episode 79, because they both show some unseasonably warm weather for the time they're set, which is the middle of winter. In the English dub, the music used during Sailor Mars' and Sailor Mercury's transformations was to be Sailor Moon's transformation music in 'S', but DiC wasn't able to dub 'S'. May I just point out that the R Movie features what I believe to be one of the only shots in the anime where it is possible to fix the "camera's" precise geographical location. -Since Sailor Moon died temporarily near the very end of the film, it would have made a little more sense if Chibiusa slowly started to vanish when the scene cut to her, as her mother dying would have taken away here existence, and would re-materalize after the flower of life revived Sailor Moon.
