Jiji was the sixth of the Seven Great Youma, reincarnated as Rei's Grandfather. He appeared in episode 30 of the anime.

During the era of the Silver Millennium, Jiji served Queen Metalia. As one of the Seven Great Youma, he was amongst the Dark Kingdom's most powerful monsters, although it is unknown precisely what form he took during this time. He participated in Metalia's attack on the Moon, but perished along with the rest of the Dark Kingdom when Queen Serenity used the Silver Crystal against their armies. Jiji was not entirely killed, however - the Silver Crystal neutralized the evil powers of the Seven Great Youma by sealing their souls into crystal fragments, known as Rainbow Crystals. The souls of the Seven Great Youma were then sent into the future, along with the deceased inhabitants of the Moon Kingdom, to be reincarnated as humans.

Jiji was reincarnated in early twentieth century Japan as the man who would later become known as Rei's Grandfather. He had no memories of his previous life, and the Indigo Rainbow Crystal within him prevented the evil tendencies of his old form from resurfacing. His magical powers were not repressed entirely, however, and manifested themselves (perhaps ironically) in an ability to detect and fight evil spirits. These powers were useful in his occupation as a Shinto priest.

Jiji's latent powers and form were restored outside the Hikawa Shrine after Zoisite used the Black Crystal to remove the Indigo Rainbow Crystal from Rei's Grandfather's body. Zoisite ordered Jiji to attack Tuxedo Mask, but Tuxedo Mask quickly fled into the woods in pursuit of Zoisite and the Rainbow Crystal. Jiji instead began to chase Yuuichirou Kumada and Rei Hino. Yuuichirou was knocked out trying to protect Rei, while Rei discovered from the shrine's holy fire that the monster was her grandfather. Unable to fight him, she was saved when Usagi arrived at the shrine and transformed into Sailor Moon. On Luna's advice, Rei immobilised Jiji with an ofuda, sealing his powers. Sailor Moon then used Moon Healing Escalation to permanently expel Jiji's essence from Rei's grandfather.

Jiji's twentieth century incarnation resembled an oni (鬼) with red skin, a white mane, and yellow, rolling eyes.

Powers

Jiji's primary ability was his superhuman speed. He also had the ability to fire energy blasts from his mouth, and had very sharp claws. Tactically, he was not particularly skilled, displaying only a low level of intelligence and relying mainly on instinct.

Trivia

  • "Jiji" is also a slightly pejorative Japanese term ("爺") that means "old man." It probably comes from the fact that Jiji was Rei's grandfather (who was an old man).
