Sailor Moon Drops was a mobile phone game first released in Japan in September 2015, with an English version released in April 2016. It was a match-three puzzle game, where the player had to clear different colored gems from the board in order to achieve the stage's objective, similar to games like Candy Crush. Each stage allowed only a certain number of moves with which to complete the objective; any moves left over at the end earned bonus points. Completing certain objectives could also earn trophies, which were exchanged for boosters or other special items.

The player began with only Sailor Moon as a character, and as they advanced through the stages they saw short episodes that followed the story of the series through the Stars arc, plus an additional "Dark Kingdom: Another Story" arc, which showed the past Silver Millennium and the relationship between Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion and hinted at romance between the Inner Senshi and Shitennou. The player could obtain new characters during the course of the story, while other characters could be obtained during special time-limited events. During character events, an icon took the player to a special map or series of maps, and completing the stages there earned various items as well as the objective character.

The servers of the English and Japanese versions of the game were shut down March 28, 2019.

Stage Types

The stage selection map

The map led the player through a succession of increasingly difficult stages, each of which had to be completed before moving on. As the player progressed, additional mechanics were introduced to make the stages more challenging, such as immovable tiles that had to be destroyed by making matches next to them or cages that covered pieces and prevented them from moving until that piece was used in a match. There were also "item" stages, from which the player could obtain items like pieces of a downloadable wallpaper or keys that allowed them to pass locks at certain points on the map.

The puzzles on each stage included the following types:

  • Get the target score! - The player had to reach a certain score to complete the stage. This was the only objective of the first few stages in the game, then all subsequent stages required the player to reach a target score before it was complete, even if they had reached the main objective.
  • Break the barriers! - Barriers appeared on the screen that could be broken by clearing the colored piece beneath them. As the stages advanced, more pieces needed to be cleared in order to break certain barriers.
  • Defeat the enemy! - A Youma appeared on the board and could be "attacked" by clearing specific colored pieces. After the player made a certain number of moves, the Youma would change and/or reduce the pieces they were vulnerable to, making it more difficult to attack the longer it took. Another variation of the stage required matching pieces next to small Youma which would multiply after any turn where none were destroyed.
  • Collect the Accessories! - The player had to clear away pieces to allow a Transformation Brooch, a bow, and a tiara to fall to the bottom of the screen and be "collected." Different stages required different numbers of each piece to be collected.
  • Match the pieces! - The player was given a specified amount of certain pieces that had to be cleared from the board.
  • Race against time! - The player was given 60 seconds to clear as many pieces as possible. Pieces that added 5 seconds also appeared on the board at random during the stage.
  • Release the Silver Crystals! - Silver Crystals appeared on the board in the original "sealed" form, then as pieces immediately next to it were cleared away, it opened into its "lotus" form and then vanished.
  • Look for Luna! - The player had to clear away opaque barriers on the board to find pictures of Luna hidden behind some of them.
  • Smash the Plates and defeat the enemy! - Like the previous enemy stage, a Youma appeared on the board that had to be defeated by clearing away specific pieces. However, instead of changing the pieces it was vulnerable to, every few moves this enemy would create barriers blocking off parts of the board.
  • Make Cakes! - The player had to collect a certain number of whole cakes, which were created by swapping slices of cake with each other.
  • Defeat the enemy! Familiars assemble! - Similar to the original Defeat the enemy levels, a Youma needed to be "attacked" by clearing pieces of specific colors. In this version, when the countdown ran out a "familiar" appeared on the board, hiding three of the pieces from view, though it could be moved and then defeated by clearing one or more of the pieces behind it.
  • Help Diana reach the goal! - The player had to clear paw-shaped pieces off the board to make Diana move forward along a path toward a goal, while also clearing away any obstacles in that path.
  • Get the target score! - The player had to reach a certain score.
  • Take back the Talismans! - The player had to clear "enemy" pieces from the board by clearing adjacent pieces. Once the enemy piece disappeared a Talisman took its place, and had to then be dropped to the bottom of the screen to be collected. If the Talisman remained on the screen too long after appearing, it would be "recaptured" and become an enemy piece again.

Special Pieces

When the player cleared 4 or more pieces in different patterns, it left behind special pieces that could be helpful in completing puzzles. When special pieces were swapped with each other, they became even more powerful than when used alone.

  • Stripe - Match 4 pieces in a row. Clearing 4 vertical pieces gave the player a horizontal Stripe, which cleared one row, while clearing 4 horizontal pieces gave a vertical Stripe, which cleared one column.
  • Popper - Match pieces in a T or L shape. Poppers would clear the 3x3 square surrounding them twice.
  • Paint - Match 6 pieces. Paint pieces turned other pieces its color. For example, swapping a pink Paint piece with a blue piece turned all blue pieces pink.
  • Prism - Match 5 pieces in a row. When swapped with another piece, it removed all pieces of that color, so for example, swapping a Prism with a blue piece removed all blue pieces from the board.
  • Stripe + Stripe - Cleared a row and a column.
  • Stripe + Popper - Cleared three rows and three columns.
  • Popper + Popper - Cleared a 5x5 square twice.
  • Paint + Stripe - Changed all pieces the color of the Stripe piece into the color of the Paint piece, then turned all pieces that color into Stripe pieces and set them all off.
  • Paint + Popper - Changed all pieces the color of the Popper piece into the color of the Paint piece, then turned all pieces that color into Popper pieces and set them all off.
  • Paint + Paint - Turned all pieces on the board to the color of the second Paint piece, then cleared them off.
  • Prism + Stripe - Turned all pieces the color of the Stripe piece into Stripe pieces, then set them off.
  • Prism + Popper - Turned all pieces the color of the Popper piece into Popper pieces, then set them off.
  • Prism + Paint - Turned all pieces on the board to the color of the Paint piece, then cleared them off.
  • Prism + Prism - Cleared all pieces from the board.

Boosters

These special items provided help for the player to achieve a stage's objective, and could be earned from certain stages or in events, purchased from the in-app store, or exchanged for collected trophies.

  • Stripe-Popper - Added a Stripe piece and a Popper piece at the beginning of the stage.
  • Prism - Added a Prism piece at the beginning of the stage.
  • Luna P Double - Added two Luna P pieces at the beginning of the stage, each of which removed the surrounding eight pieces when tapped.
  • Score Enhancer - This made the player's score increase faster.
  • Skill Charger - This made the special ability gauge fill up faster.
  • Piece Crusher - This let the player remove one piece of their choice.
  • Item Catcher - Picked up an accessory.
  • Color Crusher - Removed all pieces of a chosen color.
  • Block Crusher - Took three random Silver Crystals, plates, cages or multiplying enemies down one level; if none were present, it destroyed regular pieces instead.
  • Cake Combiner - Made a cake from chosen cake pieces without having to swap them with each other.
  • All Crusher - Removed all pieces in the puzzle and reduced all breakable blocks (Crystals, plates, cages, etc.) down one level.

Characters

Playing as Sailor Moon

Once obtained, characters could be leveled up by collecting "Growth Stamps," which were found by unlocking certain stages on the map, or completing a special map during a character event or during stamp events. Each character had a special ability that could be unlocked at level 2, then a powered-up ability unlocked at level 5 (the maximum level). A gauge on the screen filled up when the player cleared the pink heart-shaped pieces, and when it was full they could then use the special ability.
