The appearance of the Silver Crystal triggers memories of Usagi and Mamoru's previous incarnations in the Silver Millennium.
Summary[edit]
Luna is amazed to discover that Sailor Moon is the reincarnation of Princess Serenity. Zoisite reacts to the revelation by attacking Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask, but Sailor Moon, in her transformed, dreamlike state, easily deflects his attack with the powered-up Moon Stick and sends him flying into a wall. Tuxedo Mask then wakes up, and recognizes her as Serenity. He says that he is Endymion, and the memories of her past life begin to return.
A series of scattered images enter her mind. She sees herself and Endymion overlooking an ancient palace. She gives Endymion a gift: the Orgel that was owned by Tuxedo Mask. Suddenly the scene is cast into flames, and Endymion flies away into the fire, Serenity powerless to stop him.
Back in the Star Light Tower, Sailor Moon's appearance returns to normal and she collapses. The other Sailor Senshi rush to her aid, but discover that she has merely fainted from the trauma of her returning memories. Tuxedo Mask, however, is in a much more serious state. Kunzite appears to help the injured Zoisite. Faced with the Sailor Senshi, who now have the Silver Crystal in their possession, he declines to fight them, but before he dematerializes with Zoisite, he seizes the unconscious Tuxedo Mask.
Zoisite and Kunzite report back to Queen Beryl, who is less than thrilled with their performance. She chides Kunzite for losing the Silver Crystal and allowing the Moon Princess to awaken, but her real anger is directed at Zoisite, who contradicted her orders and tried to kill Tuxedo Mask. Despite Kunzite's attempts to intervene, she punishes Zoisite for his crimes with a lethal blast of energy.
Beryl summons the Dark Kingdom's great ruler, Queen Metalia. She presents the entity with Tuxedo Mask, who, they now realize, is the reincarnation of Endymion, Prince of Earth. Metalia commands Beryl to revive him using the power of darkness.
Meanwhile, Kunzite attends the dying Zoisite, having tried unsuccessfully to persuade Beryl to revive him. Zoisite says that he wants to die beautifully, so Kunzite uses his magic to surround them with flowers. Zoisite tells Kunzite that he loves him, then dies in his arms.
The Sailor Senshi search for an exit from the Star Light Tower, but this is impeded by the fact that the tower no longer occupies normal dimensional space. Sailor Moon regains consciousness and is shocked to find that Tuxedo Mask has gone. Sailor Mars says that he is alive, but has been captured by the enemy. Now that the Moon Princess has awakened, Luna and Artemis' memories have fully returned, and they begin to tell the Sailor Senshi the truth about their origins.
Artemis and Luna describe the ancient Moon Kingdom, the Silver Millennium, in which Princess Serenity lived. During her lifetime, the Earth was taken over by an evil spirit which attacked the Silver Millennium in order to steal the Silver Crystal. Although the Kingdom was destoyed in the fierce battle, its guardians were able to harness the Silver Crystal's power and seal away the evil spirit. Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus are reincarnations of the warriors who fought for the Moon Kingdom. The Kingdom's queen wished for them and her daughter to live peaceful lives, so she sent them to be reincarnated in a peaceful future on Earth. However, the seal on the evil entity has now been broken, triggering the awakening of the Sailor Senshi. In order to resume their peaceful lives, they must protect the Silver Crystal and defeat the Dark Kingdom.
The Sailor Senshi agree to fight, apart from Sailor Moon who, broken by her experiences, refuses to carry on. Sailor Mars slaps her, and calls her a coward, but Artemis and Sailor Mercury intervene, arguing that Sailor Moon needs time to regain her confidence. Meanwhile, Sailor Mercury has located the exit, and the Sailor Senshi begin their retreat.
They are met at the exit by Kunzite. Despite the efforts of Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus, Kunzite is impervious to attacks due to the altered space inside the building. He sends their attacks back at them, knocking them out. Sailor Mars pleads with Sailor Moon to regain her confidence before attacking Kunzite, knowing that a harsh retaliation awaits her. As she and Sailor Mercury are knocked aside, Sailor Moon hears the voices of her partners, and Tuxedo Mask, telepathically calling to her. As she steps up to face Kunzite, he vows revenge for Zoisite, but Sailor Moon sends his own furious attack back at him with the Silver Crystal. Bombarded by his own energy, he has no choice but to withdraw, the warped Star Light Tower fading away as he retreats.
While Beryl begins the process of reviving Tuxedo Mask, the Sailor Senshi emerge from the ruins of the tower. Sailor Venus thanks Sailor Moon for saving them, and Sailor Moon agrees to continue the fight.
Episode trivia[edit]
- This episode revealed that the names of Usagi and Mamoru's past incarnations were Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion. It also revealed that the name of the Dark Kingdom's ruler was Queen Metalia.
- This episode featured the first of three appearances by Queen Serenity; the others were in episode 44 and episode 51.
- Queen Serenity had blonde hair in this episode, but in all later appearances she had silver hair.
- The episode featured the death of Zoisite and the near-death of Mamoru.
- As Zoisite died, the background music was "Solveig's Song" from Edward Grieg's symphony Peer Gynt.
- In the original English dub, DiC cut out the moment when Sailor Mars slapped Sailor Moon in the face, but it appeared in the preview at the beginning of the episode and Sailor Moon was still clutching her face in pain immediately afterward.
